My Name is Kevin Mobley, teaching the youth of tomorrow has quickly become a passion of mine. As a young child I was evaluated as needing extra help in language and reading classes, to bolster my reading comprehension. I spent my 2nd-5th grade between Special Needs and Main Stream classes. Once in middle school, I tested out of resource driven English classes, but still had Individualized Education Program meetings to make sure I was on track. I had strived to get myself out of resource classes and accomplished my goal. I soon arrived in High School, where because of my IEPs, I was placed into resource classes. Once again I would test out of them, but as a freshman, people noticed that I was in different classes to start the year and I would strive to never let my handicaps define who I was. With hardwork and determination I would graduate and start Junior College, with the same cycle of keeping my options open as a resource student, but not having any special resources. My parents wanted me to keep the options there, but I would just work harder to never have to use the resources. I would achieve Dean's List, once at Mt. San Jacinto Junior College and have achieved the honor three times in my 5 semesters at California State University, San Marcos. I have come a long way from the 2nd grader that struggled in reading comprehension.
While at Elsinore High School, I had an opportunity to help with special needs students. Through one of my basketball coaches and Special Needs Science teacher, Rick Wolters allowed me to enter the classroom and see the learning experience from the other side. As a teachers aid, I help mostly with grading and some tutoring. The people that know me best think it is an interesting choice to want to teach Special Needs, as I worked so hard to become mainstream. I know what the students are going through with learning disabilities and the challenges they face. I hope to be a bridge to help students reach there potential. Everyone has strengths and weaknesses. Some just need more help with their weaknesses than others.
While getting my Bachelor's degree at CSU, San Marcos I have also been involved in coaching Junior Varsity Girl's Basketball (6 years),Freshman Boy's Basketball (6 years), and JV Boy's Basketball (2 years). I have also helped with the running or Tiger Basketball, a youth basketball league at Elsinore High School.
As a 2nd grader adjusting to a learning disability, I would never have seen myself as a teacher. As a high schooler I would not have seen myself coaching, but months after graduating I was coaching high school athletes. My opportunities have been a blessing, whether it be coaching or volunteering in k-12 classrooms the opportunity to help others and see students succeed never ceases to amaze me about the enjoyment I receive.
Respectfully,
Kevin Mobley
