Last week I had the opportunity to teach a lesson in a 2nd grade class, that I have been working with for the last month.
First off, it was so great to visit a 2nd grade general education class. I spent my first cycle of student teaching for my multiple subject credential in a 2nd grade classroom. For my lesson, I decided to apply the background knowledge/shared experience aspect of teaching to Arrays, including rows and columns. I used whole group to present the information, worksheets to check for understanding, and an interactive activity that helped to show the useful application of the concept. The use of the interactive activity was a big hit. Applying students’ past experience of sporting events/concerts and how seats are in rows and sections (columns) seemed to really engage the students. Applying background information to the curriculum really helped the students learn the curriculum. A couple days after the lesson, the teacher, who’s class I had been using for my observation, told me that students made the connection with columns when they went to add and subtract and were lining up numbers.
